1910 was a very special year for both Rolex and H.L. Gross Jewelers. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, had succeeded in receiving the first ever Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision issued on a wristwatch, granted by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne, Switzerland.
This same year, brothers Harry & Abe Gross, with their bold ambition and help from their father, opened a jewelry store in downtown Brooklyn, New York. The first jewelry display was located on the sidewalk in front of their store, built upon shelves supported by sugar barrels!
A Partnership is formed
During World War II, Howard Gross, the third-generation owner, was first introduced to Rolex watches while serving as a radar navigator on a troop transport ship. Witnessing them showcased in European watch stores, he was captivated by their superior quality, design, and functionality. Upon his return to the family business after the war, Howard shared his fervor with his father. Together, they resolved to forge a partnership with Rolex, a decision realized in 1958. This strategic collaboration proved immensely successful, as their stores in Hempstead, Brooklyn, and Jamaica, NY all experienced great success with the brand. In 1969, 3rd & 4th generation owners Howard & Michael Gross brought the Rolex brand to Garden City in their new 3.000 sq. ft store which opened on Franklin Avenue.
The time is now
Across the street from the original Garden City showroom, H.L. Gross introduced its new and expanded 7,000 sq. ft. showroom, boasting a dedicated 1,100 sq ft. Rolex environment. The new store is poised to uphold the unwavering standards of quality, value, and customer service synonymous with both the Rolex and H.L. Gross names.
